🔑 Keywords (Deutsch) kritische Übergänge Frühwarnsignale strukturelle Kompression Spektralentropie effektiver Rang Kovarianzmatrix multivariate Systeme Fold-Bifurkation Komplexität CRTI 📝 Zenodo Description (English) This study investigates structural compression as an early indicator of critical transitions in multivariate dynamical systems. While classical early warning signals (EWS), such as variance and autocorrelation, primarily capture amplitude-based changes, this work introduces a complementary structural perspective. The key quantity is the effective rank (Φ), derived from the spectral entropy of the covariance matrix. It quantifies how variance is distributed across system eigenmodes. In both a multivariate Ornstein–Uhlenbeck benchmark and a nonlinear fold-type system, Φ exhibits a monotonic decline prior to strong responses in classical EWS. This suggests that systems may first lose structural diversity before exhibiting large-amplitude fluctuations. In addition, the Composite Recovery–Structural Indicator (CRTI) is analyzed, combining dynamic persistence (AR(1)) with structural compression. Results indicate that structural indicators provide a complementary early warning perspective, particularly in multivariate settings. The analysis is deliberately restricted to fold-type transitions under stochastic forcing, with explicit consideration of covariance estimation (Ledoit–Wolf shrinkage), local stationarity, and trend-based evaluation (Kendall’s τ). 🔑 Keywords (English) critical transitions early warning signals structural compression spectral entropy effective rank covariance matrix multivariate systems fold bifurcation complexity science CRTI
