This preprint introduces the Compression–Response Transition Index (CRTI), a composite early warning signal for fold (saddle-node) bifurcations in multivariate systems. Classical early warning signals (EWS) such as variance and lag-1 autocorrelation capture critical slowing down and therefore reflect the dynamic response of a system. By construction, they are largely insensitive to the structural reorganization of the covariance geometry that can accompany the approach to instability. CRTI addresses this gap by combining: a structural component Φ(t), defined as the exponential of the spectral entropy of the time-varying covariance matrix (effective rank), and a dynamic component R(t), derived from the autocorrelation structure of the dominant mode. The composite index is defined as: T(t) = R(t) / Φ(t) Under explicitly stated conditions—approach to a fold bifurcation, approximately isotropic noise, and multivariate observability (d ≥ 2)—the framework provides a scale-invariant, structurally informed indicator that complements classical EWS. A central element is the Structural–Dynamic Separability (SDS) condition,|corr(R, Φ)| < θ (default θ ≈ 0.7),which defines when the structural and dynamic channels carry distinct information. When SDS is violated, CRTI reduces to a single-driver representation; this regime is formalized as the Relaxation–Coupling Failure Mode (RCFM). A second failure mode, Projection-Induced Distortion (PID), addresses artifacts due to a drifting eigenbasis. A minimal conceptual demonstration illustrates the expected qualitative ordering of indicators (Φ → R → variance), while emphasizing that no universal lead time is claimed and that the results are conditional on the stated assumptions. CRTI is not proposed as a universal early warning signal. Instead, it is formulated as a bounded, falsifiable framework with: explicit scope (fold bifurcations only), explicit interpretability constraints (SDS), and explicit failure modes (RCFM, PID). In systems where covariance geometry evolves independently of relaxation dynamics, ignoring Φ discards observable structural information not recoverable from variance or autocorrelation alone. Description (DE) Dieses Preprint stellt den Compression–Response Transition Index (CRTI) vor, ein zusammengesetztes Frühwarnsignal für Fold- (Sattelpunkt-) Bifurkationen in multivariaten Systemen.
