Abstract

This work introduces the effective rank Φ(t), derived from the spectral entropy of the covariance matrix, as a structural complement to classical early warning signals (EWS) for critical transitions. Traditional indicators such as variance and lag-1 autocorrelation primarily capture dynamical slowing (Critical Slowing Down, CSD), but remain insensitive to structural changes in multivariate systems. In contrast, Φ(t) measures the effective dimensionality of system fluctuations, revealing how variance is distributed across degrees of freedom. Under near-equilibrium conditions and non-degenerate stochastic forcing, fold-type transitions are typically associated with a progressive concentration of variance into a reduced number of dominant modes, reflected in a systematic decrease of Φ(t) (in expectation). This phenomenon is interpreted as structural fragilization. To enhance empirical detectability, we define a composite diagnostic, the Compression–Response Transition Index (CRTI), T(t) = R(t) / Φ(t), where R(t) denotes a recovery or variability proxy. CRTI acts as an amplification mechanism, combining dynamic response and structural compression, rather than representing a fundamental law. The framework is formulated conservatively, with explicit conditions of validity and clearly identified failure modes, including anisotropic noise, finite-sample bias (Marchenko–Pastur regime), non-normal dynamics, absence of spectral separation, and violation of structural–dynamic separability. This approach complements existing early warning frameworks by adding a structural dimension to the analysis of critical transitions in multivariate systems. 🔑 Keywords (EN) early warning signals, critical transitions, effective rank, spectral entropy, complex systems, multivariate analysis, fold bifurcation, critical slowing down, covariance structure, random matrix theory 🔑 Keywords (DE) Frühwarnsignale, kritische Übergänge, effektiver Rang, spektrale Entropie, komplexe Systeme, multivariate Analyse,Fold-Bifurkation,kritische Verlangsamung,Kovarianzstruktur,Zufallsmatrixtheorie
