Abstract

Classical early warning signals (EWS), such as rising variance and lag-1 autocorrelation, are widely used to detect critical slowing down prior to regime shifts. However, their interpretation becomes less clear in multivariate systems, where structural changes in covariance may precede observable dynamical effects. This work introduces a complementary structural indicator based on spectral entropy, capturing the effective rank of the covariance matrix as a measure of structural compression. This quantity is combined with a recovery-based proxy into a composite index, the Compression–Response Transition Index (CRTI). Using linear stochastic systems approaching fold bifurcations, the results show that spectral compression systematically precedes increases in variance and autocorrelation, providing an additional dimension of observability in multivariate settings. The proposed approach is designed as a structural complement to classical early warning signals, extending their interpretability without replacing established indicators. Its formulation is intentionally minimal and may be applicable to empirical multivariate systems across domains.
