Abstract

This paper describes a decentralized control strategy for the automation of\nroad intersections and studies its impact on traffic in a realistic urban road\nnetwork. The controller incorporates a consensus-based auction algorithm\n(CBAA-M), which allows vehicles to agree on a crossing order at each road\nintersection, and an on-board model predictive controller that avoids\ncollisions with other traffic participants, while trying to satisfy performance\nmetrics over time. Randomized simulations show that this decentralized control\napproach guarantees efficiency, safety, and a higher throughput than\ntraditional solutions.\n
