Carnuntum was the capital of Pannonia, and also after the dividing of the province to Superior and Inferior it remained the most important political and military centre of the province that had three legions. Its significance was due to its crossroad situation. The ancient Amber Road crossed the Danube at this point, and soon after the Roman occupation the army built the Limes Road along the Danube. The Amber Road was the artery of the Roman trade with the Barbaricum from Aquileia to the North Sea, and the Limes Road assured the military and civilian movements along the Danube between the Eastern and Western segments of the Roman Empire. However, as such an important place, there were other built roads in the region, running to Carnuntum from diverse directions.
