Abstract

In the course of the large-scale archaeological prospection project „ArchPro Carnuntum 2011–2015“, a new military camp was discovered in the military settlement (canabae legionis) of Carnuntum (Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Lower Austria). This military camp, measuring approx. 1.73 ha, was part of the Roman governor’s seat, which was located directly west of the legionary fortress. South of it was an exceptionally large, palace-like structure that finds its best comparisons in Roman villa architecture, especially among the peristyle villas in Pannonia. These new discoveries provide many new aspects on the accommodation, size and structure of the governor‘s guard as well as on the appearance of governor’s residences in a Roman province.
