Abstract

During the reign of the Samanids (9th – 10th centuries), the Turks, as well as at the ‘Abbasid court in Baghdad, played an important role in government affairs at all levels and throughout the entire period of the reign of their dynasty. Under the Samanids, almost all key positions, both at their court and in other cities and regions of Khorasan and Transoxiana under their control, were occupied by Turks. As for defense and law enforcement, these areas were completely in the hands of the Turks. Many of the Turkic Samanid military leaders were major state and political figures, many of them founded dynasties of local rulers and played an important role in the political life of Central Asia. Just as in the ‘Abbasid court, many of the Turkic rulers of the Samanid territories came to power through military service. However, among them there were many descendants of local pre-Islamic Turkic dynasties that owned these lands before the Samanids, who only nominally recognized the central government and remained virtually independent. When the Samanids were deposed and power passed into the hands of a new Muslim-Turkic dynasty in the person of the Karakhanids, many of them, without hesitation, went into the service of the new rulers.
