Sunflower verticillium wilt is caused by a fungus, Verticillium dahliae, which attacks plants through their root systems. Gradually colonizing the vascular system of plants, it causes necrosis on the leaves, which can lead to complete premature ripening of the plants. In order to clarify the harmfulness of the disease, a project associating Terres Inovia, GEVES, UFS (Union française des semenciers) and six seed companies, was carried out in 2016. Eleven varieties, chosen torepresent the full range of behaviors against this disease (from susceptible varieties to varieties with a good behaviour) and to explore a wide range of yield potential and richness in oil, were tested on nine platforms. The harmfulness of the disease is explained by the highest class of severity of symptoms, a class which is characterized by the presence of symptoms on almost all the leaves of the plant: -2 q / ha and -0.3 point oil content per 10% of plants in this class. This harmfulness appears stable, whatever the behavior of the variety. Within the framework of the registration - post-registration continuum, an operational protocol for evaluating varieties against this disease is now offered to breeders as soon as they register for the French Catalog, consistent with the post-registration protocol.
