Among the societal challenges facing the livestock sector, animal welfare is a strong demand. This paper traces the main steps of investment in animal welfare by animal protection associations, the livestock industry and research bodies. A first part shows how the various actors initially acted separately from each other. A second part illustrates how the stakeholders have come together in recent years to implement shared strategies through a scientific base. A last part briefly presents how research bodies have broadened their missions over the last ten years by strengthening their support for the French competent authorities, in particular through their involvement in the establishment of national and European reference centres.
