Abstract

Animal welfare implementation is based on numerous approaches ranging from simple regulatory compliance to more complex assessment tools. These approaches combine environment/ management based and animal based indicators in varying proportions. They should develop in the future but are still not well known to livestock sector operators. This project aimed at informing professionals about the different types of tools and their possible uses and at assisting them to built new tools. During the project a literature review and fact sheets describing the existing tools were drafted. Interviews were conducted to investigate the perception of the operators regarding these approaches and an information seminar took place. These approaches were quite favorably received and it appeared that future tools should be specific to meet the particular needs of different operators and co-constructed. Meanwhile, work was also carried out about the issue of human-animal relationship on farm, taking into account sociological, ergonomic, ethological and zootechnical points of view. A better understanding of the animal and its reactions to handling is a way to refocus attention on the animal and to improve welfare related practices
