Abstract

Abstract— A coaxial, flashlamp‐pumped, dye laser is being used to directly excite ground state oxygen at high pressures (˜150atm, ˜15MPa), to singlet oxygen. The parameters of the laser beam are as follows: pulse width, ˜350ns; beam diameter, ˜18 mm; beam energy, ˜3J/pulse (at 590 nm using Rhodamine 6G in ethanol as the dye). The laser can be tuned to produce light beams at most of the wavelengths at which oxygen shows optical absorption. Singlet oxygen has been produced in solutions of oxygen (˜15 MPa) in Freon‐113 and CCl 4 by irradiation at 477, 575 and 632 nm.
