Abstract

This article explores how students' academic and social involvement during the transition to college affects their grades, satisfaction with college, and attrition. Minority students appear to benefit especially from involvement in extracurricular activities. However, negative perceptions of the campus racial environment undermine minority satisfaction with college and increase the likelihood of leaving.
