It's time to ask what happened to what Lazarsfeld and Stanton (1944:vii) casually called' 'the discipline of communications research." Much of the history of this enterprise, discipline or not, can be written as a set of continuing arguments with Paul Lazarsfeld. Far from subsiding, these arguments have become more pointed in the last decade.
