After briefly summarizing information about the Central Asian countries and their libraries, the authors discuss the challenges facing the national bibliographic agencies there. In Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, the national bibliographies have ceased. In the other three countries, national bibliographic indexes are published, but only in print format, and they do not cover non-print material. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are actively working to modernize their national bibliographies. Bibliographers in the other countries are ready to move to international standards and automation, but are hindered by logistical and financial problems. They would benefit greatly from assistance by the international bibliographic community.
