Abstract

Beginning with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and continuing into the present, it has been notoriously difficult to find reliable data on the bibliographic output of the Central Asian republics. The period of transition that ensued understandably created challenges for publishing and bibliographic control. It also brought new questions about the role of the book chambers in relation to the national libraries. The republics vary in their responses to these matters, but overall there is a strong need for more concrete information and for greater cooperation not only among these republics, but also in the international community.
