Abstract

This study introduces Structural Compression (Φ) as a multivariate indicator of effective dimensionality and proposes the Composite Recovery–Structural Indicator (CRTI) as a complementary early warning signal for critical transitions in complex systems. Classical Early Warning Signals (EWS), such as variance and autocorrelation, are primarily based on amplitude dynamics and the phenomenon of critical slowing down. While effective in many settings, these indicators may fail to capture structural changes in high-dimensional systems prior to observable increases in variability. In this work, Structural Compression is defined via the spectral entropy of the covariance matrix, providing a measure of the effective number of degrees of freedom in a multivariate system. A decline in Φ indicates a concentration of variance into fewer dominant modes, reflecting increased coupling and reduced system flexibility. The CRTI integrates structural compression (Φ) with a recovery-based indicator (R), derived from the AR(1) coefficient of the leading principal component. This composite formulation captures the joint evolution of structural and dynamical properties. The framework is evaluated using sector-level financial time series data (2003–2012), covering the period surrounding the 2008 global financial crisis. The results suggest that structural changes in the covariance geometry may precede observable increases in classical amplitude-based indicators. The results should be interpreted as proof-of-concept evidence rather than a definitive empirical validation. The proposed approach is intended as a complementary extension to existing early warning signal methodologies and may be applicable across financial, ecological, and other complex multivariate systems.
