Abstract

This study introduces a multivariate early warning framework based on structural compression of the covariance spectrum. Classical early warning signals (EWS), such as variance and lag-1 autocorrelation (AR(1)), rely on critical slowing down and are inherently univariate. In multivariate systems approaching instability, however, the dominant precursor can be a reorganization of covariance structure rather than a simple increase in amplitude. We define the Compression–Response Transition Index (CRTI),T(t) = R(t) / Φ(t),where Φ(t) = exp(Hspec(t)) represents the effective rank derived from the spectral entropy of rolling covariance matrices, and R(t) = 1 - α1(t) is a recovery proxy based on the AR(1) coefficient of the leading principal component. The method is evaluated on daily log-returns of nine US sector ETFs over 2003–2012, using the 2008 financial crisis as a pre-specified event, and validated out-of-sample on the 2020 COVID-19 market shock without parameter re-tuning. On the 2008 window, CRTI achieves an AUC of 0.88 and a lead time of approximately 288 trading days, outperforming variance, AR(1), and the effective rank alone. No sustained false positives are observed in the 2018–2020 pre-event period. Out-of-sample performance remains competitive, with shorter lead times consistent with the exogenous character of the COVID-19 shock. The framework is explicitly scoped: it applies to fold-type critical transitions in multivariate systems with anisotropic covariance structure and requires satisfaction of a Structural–Dynamic Separability (SDS) condition. In isotropic regimes, the estimator becomes uninformative, which is reported as a validation of its scope rather than a limitation of implementation. These results suggest that structural compression provides a complementary and empirically testable dimension for early warning analysis in complex systems. 🔑 Keywords (EN) early warning signals critical transitions fold bifurcation multivariate systems structural compression spectral entropy effective rank covariance structure financial markets systemic risk time series analysis 🔑 Keywords (DE) Frühwarnsignale kritische Übergänge Fold-Bifurkation multivariate Systeme strukturelle Kompression spektrale Entropie effektiver Rang Kovarianzstruktur Finanzmärkte systemisches Risiko Zeitreihenanalyse
