Anti‐Racist Action Among Counseling Students: Examining the Role of Ethnic Identity, Critical Consciousness, and Multicultural Program Environment

Abstract

ABSTRACT Using a cross‐sectional survey with 295 participants from 27 CACREP‐accredited programs, this study explored relationships between demographic variables, ethnic‐racial identity, critical consciousness, multicultural program environment, and self‐reported anti‐racist action. Key findings indicated that ethnic‐racial salience, critical consciousness, and a multiculturalist inclusive identity predicted anti‐racist action with a large effect. In contrast, multicultural program environment was not a statistically significant predictor in the regression model. The results highlight the importance of fostering critical consciousness and racial identity development within counselor training to facilitate anti‐racist action, suggesting implications for instructional practices.
