Thermally stable, not very volatile, easy to transport and to store, accurately dosable —these are the advantages of bis(trichloromethyl) carbonate 1 as a substitute for phosgene. In addition, stoichiometric amounts of 1 suffice for chloroformylations, carbonylations, chlorinations, and dehydrations, which, moreover, proceed in good to very good yields. equation image
