The events occurring in Central Asia over the past decades – interethnic conflicts, the establishment of nation states, forced migration, followed by labor migration – contribute to the public’s growing interest in the history of the former Russian empire’s Asian outskirts. The author, who has compiled a digital library (blog) entitled «Russian Turkestan: History, People, Customs,» dedicated to the pre-revolutionary history of Central Asia and its neighboring regions, set out to satisfy this interest to some extent. His blog contains articles, travel essays, and stories drawn from historical publications of this period, illustrated with specially selected drawings and photographs. Based on the example of this digital media, the article demonstrates that a private online diary can become an effective tool that draws public attention to history and national cultural traditions.
