Russian Orientalists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries demonstrated a sustained interest in the legacy of this era. They focused both on the historical and philosophical ideas of medieval authors and on the material evidence of cultural flourishing, including manuscripts, architectural monuments, epigraphy, as well as museum and library collections. Research conducted within the framework of Oriental studies contributed to the introduction of a number of monuments of Central Asian historiography into academic circulation. The study of the Renaissance period in Central Asia became an important field within the Russian Orientalist tradition, where scholarly interest was closely intertwined with the political and cultural objectives of the colonial state. This duality calls for both recognition of scholars’ contributions to the study of the region’s rich heritage and a critical reassessment of the forms and methods of their academic activity.
