On June 3 2020, the nest of a Hoopoe Upupa epops was discovered in Philippeville, Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse. At least one and perhaps two chicks were raised successfully. The last time the species is known to have nested in Wallonia was in 1979, end point of a steep decline which had begun in the 1950s. This new return is part of a general increase in numbers of this species in countries at the northern margins of its range; an increase which is probably linked to global warming. The nestings that are now occurring in particular in Flanders and the Netherlands, along with the increase in the numbers of observations at the time of migration, give reason to hope for the return of an effective breeding population in Wallonia
