In 2021, ten breeding pairs of Sand Martin were discovered in the drain holes of the Willebroek canal in Brussels. This discovery is related to the installation of artificial nest boxes to attract the species. A previous breeding in this artificial habitat to which observers are not inclined to pay attention may have gone unnoticed. The last regional breeding of the species was in 1978.
