Recycling agro-food by-products and waste to produce the next generation of biodegradable food packaging is the challenge faced by the JRU IATE in the framework of the European project EcoBIOCAP coordinated by N. Gontard and gathering 16 academic and private partners from France, Sweden, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Hungary and Germany. This new generation of packaging materials is intended to replace our current oil-based plastics. The materials developed in EcoBIOCAP are biocomposites which constituents (biopolyesters, ligno-cellulosic fibers and bio-additives) are obtained either by fermentation of liquid waste (wastewater or effluent from olive oil-mill or dairy industry) either by milling of solid residues (wheat straw, press cake from olive oil or brewing industry). Supported by multi-scale reasoning and modelling of the relationship between structure and mass transfer properties, the EcoBIOCAP project proposed to European food industries biodegradable packaging which properties could be tailored according to the need of the food, with direct benefits either for the environment and for the consumers in terms of food quality and safety.
