Food packaging is a key actor of economic, environmental and public health stakes in the food field. All stakeholders are now requested to take part of changing food packaging materials and technologies for more sustainable solutions for both the environment and consumer health. Food packaging functionalities are now extended beyond passive barrier properties toward active and intelligent functions, with the aim to reduce food wastes and losses. Simultaneously, growing environmental protection concerns is generating efforts to reduce raw materials use, increase collecting, sorting and recycling as well as the emergency of new bio-packaging concept such as bio-sourced, renewable, biodegradable and/or compostable packaging materials. Safety concerns are still present through the migration of undesirable substances from the packaging toward the food and this permanently generates new approaches for risk prevention. Stakeholders demands are currently clearly moving toward the design and usage of sound and sustainable food packaging able to provide a good compromise between food quality, consumer safety, economic competitiveness and environmental protection.
