Today, agri-environmental assessment is constituent of the design process of action plans in French water catchment areas. However, the outlines of this assessment are not clearly defined. The aim of this paper is to propose some ways of improving the agro-environmental assessment as it seems to be currently practiced in water catchment areas, in order to support stakeholders’ learning. We focus on three major activities in the service for the design and management action plans in these water catchments: diagnosis, proposals of scenarios of changes in practices, and on-going management of actions. For each of these activities, basing on recent experiences of R&D implemented in five water catchments (Burgundy region, Haute-Normandie, Centre and Nord-Pas de Calais), we critically analyze current assessment methods, then we suggest other assessment methods, while identifying some forms of learning they generate.
