Abstract

Branched broomrape (Phelipanche ramosa), an obligate parasitic plant, causes important yield losses in France for oilseed rape, hemp and tobacco crops. There is no effective control method. The objective of this project was to better evaluate the presence of this parasite in France and quantify agricultural practices to reduce the seed bank. Infested plots were identified in Poitou-Charentes, Vendée, but also in North-East and sometimes in the South. Molecular analysis of P. ramosa diversity has highlighted three genetic types (I, II and III), the type I being largely dominant in Vendée and Poitou-Charentes and the type II in North-East. Use of rapeseed seed hulls showed a mixed efficiency as germination stimulant to reduce the level of infestation, for hemp and oilseed rape crops. The evaluation of weed (76) and crops (34) species behavior under artificial infestation revealed the species which are a risk of multiplication for broomrape. However, several crops appeared promising to reduce the seed bank of P. ramosa in the field, owing to their trap-plants or non-host behavior, as the flax, corn or sunflower. The variability of the results in field assays and some counter-intuitive observations make it necessary to carry out new experiments.
