Abstract

In the current promotion of energy crops, rapeseed has strengths as a provider of alternative biomass fuels as motor diester for example, and areas under cultivation have recently experienced a significant increase. However, canola crops require heavy use of inputs including pesticides. Thus, in a context of sustainable farming systems, it must be integrated into a rotation longer than 2 or 3 years. Indeed, many weed problems are already identified in the rotation wheat-barley-rape mainly practiced in Lorraine. The lengthening of crop rotation is a basic principle that helps fighting against weeds by breaking their breeding rate and against pests, which do not meet their host plant. This agricultural practice may be considered as an alternative to pesticide use in order to significantly reduce environmental risks. Diversification of the culture in the rotation allows an alternation of the plant mineral elements needs to allow protecting of the soil fertility. In addition, the creation of flower strips may promote auxiliary crops and thus improve pest control.
