Background: Coarctation ofthe aortarepresents 5-7% ofall congenital heart diseases. Early, at best, prenataldiagnosispermitstoimproveprognosis. Theobjectiveofthisstudyistoanalyzeepidemiological, clinical, therapeutic aspects as well as outcome of the constrictions of the aorta in neonatal period. Methods:Weconductedadescriptivestudy,enrollingallthepatientswithconstrictionoftheaortadia- gnosedandconfirmedinprenatalorneonatalperiod,over12years,inthedepartmentofneonataologyof Farhat Hached teaching hospital (Sousse). Results:Twentysevennewbornshadaconstrictionoftheaortarepresenting6. 47%ofcongenitalcardiac malformationswithanincidenceof0. 16%alivebirths. Diagnosiswassuspectedinprenatalperiodinonlyone case. Clinicalfeaturessuggestiveofacongenitalheartdiseaseweremainlycirculatoryinsufficiencyfeaturesor respiratorysymptomsnotexplainedbyapulmonarycause. Cardiacultrasoundallowedmakingthediagnosisof theconstrictionin23newborns. Thepreoperativemortalityratewasof35%andwasinrelationwiththecardiac malformation in 71. 4% ofcases. Twentyneonates survived and underwent surgery. Post operative mortality ratewasof35%withatotalmortalityof51. 8%. Therateofcoarctationrelapseamongsurvivorswas30. 8%. Conclusion : Prognosis ofthe constrictions ofthe aorta in neonatal period remains reserved in our depart- ment. It could be improvedthankstothe progress ofdiagnostic andtherapeutic means.
