Abstract

Introduction:Countries inWest and CentralAfricaaccount formorethan 30%ofthe global burden ofin- fantandchildmortality. Despiteadvancesinmedicinetoreducetheoccurrenceofdeathsamongchildren, it must be noted that this mortality is still high especially in developing countries such as Benin. The ob- jectiveofthisworkwastoidentifythefactorsassociatedwithinfantandjuvenilemortalityintheTeaching Hospital of Parakou (Benin) from January 2015 to December 2015. Method:Thiswasaretrospective, descriptive, analytical studyofthe folders ofall Children under5years of age hospitalized in the pediatric wardof the Teaching Hospital of Parakou during the year 2015. The dependent variable was infant-juvenile mortality with independent variables such as socio-demographic, clinical and evolutionary characteristics. Results:Thestudyshowedthattheinfant-juvenile mortality rate at the Teaching Hospital of Parakou in 2015 was 5. 36%. Factors associated with this mortality were acute malnutrition, bad immuniza- tionstatus,hospitalizationdurationunder24hours, home delivery and prematurity. Conclusion:Improvingthequalityofcare,reducing poverty and raising awareness among populations could significantly reduce the mortality rate in our hospitals.
