This article will attempt to show, from the literature, the centrality of self-esteem in the consciousness and the unconscious. Literary analysis can lead to significant findings in psychology and anthropology. Homer and the Greek tragedians show the ravages of self-esteem under the name of hubris while Montaigne is the way of a weighted self-esteem. Rather, it is an exaltation of the self-esteem that will highlight the romanticism as well as the modern demand for autonomy of literature.
