Giraudoux’s L’Ecole des indifférents (1911) is a collection of three learning short stories, in which every character is at the same time looking for love and artistic realization. This quest is difficult for them, due to a too strong narcissism. The following analysis will emphasize how the narcissism is linked to the structure of this work, in a double movement of both denial of and nostalgia for a primitive, archaic or natural self-esteem.
