In the field of special and visual effects, the computer-generated image has succeeded latex prosthetics in responding to the dual narrative and plastic ambitions embodied by the mask in film, and more generally in the visual arts. This article will analyze the variations and recurrences of the synthetic mask through the problematic of veiling and unveiling that it affixes to moving images. As an agent of fictional composition through the possibilities of personification it conjures up, the computer-generated image also participates in a project of disfiguration that affects both the surface and the interiority of figures and cinematographic shots.
