Since 2011, Pays d’Épinal has been supporting the “Hêtre des Vosges” label, which later became “Terres de Hêtre” (Lands of Beech). Pays d’Épinal, composed of 196 municipalities, has a forest cover of 100 000 hectares which represents 42 % of the global area. Some market opportunities must be found for the hardwood resource (62 % of the forest area), especially for species such as beech which represents 40 000 hectares. Supporting the forest-wood sector has therefore become a priority for maintaining stable economic activities in rural areas. The ultimate goal is to develop an entire industrial cluster based on the beech specie. Three strategic objectives have guided the actions of Pays d’Épinal: • Promoting rural-urban synergy • Developing the economy in an innovative way by valorising a natural resource of the region: forest and wood • Providing answers to the economic players in the territory in order to develop sustainable employment
