The assessment of the ecological risks associated with chemicals is one of the applied issues in ecotoxicology. Environmental managers need appropriate tools for the assessment of the fate and effects of toxic compounds in order to support regulatory decisions. Corresponding studies may be performed under controlled or field conditions. After a brief review of the available knowledge on the fate and effects of pesticides in aquatic ecosystems, we present the general framework and principles of ecological risk assessment. Details on their application to a priori or a fortiori pesticide risk assessment are given.
