The research issues of the INRA-URZ are based on the local conditions and constraints of the animal sector in the French West Indies. However, it appears a large distance between promising research results and advanced development of animal production, recently highlighted by livestock professionals. Therefore the methods of innovations’ transfer and also the relationships between the different partners involved through this process are questioned. We focus upon the Research - Education - Development (RED) continuum. The main methodology and a case study are highlighted. The studies must be based upon the systemic methodology and the participatory approach: more than a vertical exchange, the approach is based on the pooling of knowledge and is based on three clusters in close interaction that leads to mutual enrichment. The project of the participatory RED in Guadeloupe is focused upon mixed farming systems. It involves numerous local partners, ranging from agricultural technical advisors to farmers. In our regional context, we aim to develop alternatives to specialised and intensified agricultural standards toward more sustainable farming systems. Discussions focus on the prospects for improving the synergy between the stakeholders of the RED approach.
