Sustainable agricultural production in the humid tropics leads to several challenges as limitation of soil and climate constraints, mitigation of diseases and pests impacts, improving sustainable access to resources avoiding potentially polluting and expensive inputs. From the beginning of the eighties’ INRA initiated researches programmes and proposed several specific answers to new challenges of tropical crops and environments. As simple technological transfers showed their limits in tropical conditions, specific knowledge was developed on soil liming, irrigation and organic matter management, plant nutrition and protection by mulches, intercropping as well as plant breeding and biological control. Several innovations designed for Guadeloupe and Martinique are presented and discussed. In order to answer more efficiently to present needs in agriculture a better organisation and communication between research, extension and farmers is needed
