Short supply chains constituted an important part of periurban agriculture during a long time, before decreasing with the gobalization of the agri-food system in the XXth century. Today, they show a great diversification in periurban areas, where they are often sustained by local administration, farmers representations and consumers. However, their proportion in periurban agriculture varies as shown by our two examples in the French regions of Ile de France and Languedoc-Roussillon ; they are also complex at farm level, and linked with long supply chains in general. Short supply chains are today insufficiently known and analysed in national statisctics. A lot of research themes are to build up: a better knowledge of practices, technical and economical performances, an instruction of the question of social links renewal that they could induce, an investigation of the controversial question of their environmental impacts. A frame of research has to emerge from the available empirical studies. Such researches must be done in interdisciplinarity and in partnership with extension services.
