Samples of several bituminous roofing materials selected for examination as part of a roofing research program were left exposed to controlled high humidity conditions for approximately one year. A difference in relative humidity was maintained across the samples, one side being held at nearly 100 per cent. When the samples were removed from the permeability test cups, and it became possible to examine both sides of the specimens, it was noticed that unusual deterioration of the bituminous coating on the side with the higher humidity had occurred.
