Abstract

Observations of painted wood sidings on houses, and subsequent study of instrumented panels exposed to the elements suggest that much of the water associated with paint failure is due to rain. From automatic recordings of wood moisture content in the exposed panels (at one depth only), rapid increases were observed during a rain followed by what appeared to be similar rates of decreases when the rain ceased. Both wetting and drying of the wood were assumed to occur through the paint films.
