Abstract

Acutepoisoningwithhydrocarbonsoccupiesanimportantplaceinthevariousintoxicationsduetotheir permanent domestic use and their conditions of conservation. These intoxications are a real public health problem. Theobjectivesofourstudyweretodeterminethefrequencyandepidemiological,clinical,thera- peutic and evolutionary characteristics of acute hydrocarbon poisoning among children aged 0 to 15 years inthePediatricDepartmentofPikineNationalHospital. This was a retrospective study including all records of children aged 0 to 15 admitted to the acute Hydro- carbon poisoning Service from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017. Wecollected26patientfiles,aprevalenceof0. 8%. Oilwasthemostincriminatedproduct(61. 5%). Themostrepresentedagegroupwas2to3yearsold(53. 8%). The sex ratio was 4. 3. The intoxications were acci- dental in 100% and occurred at home. The parents administered milk to 16 patients (61. 5%), followed by induced vomiting in 46. 6% of cases. The clini-cal manifestations were dominated by respiratory disorders 9 cases (34. 6%) and digestive 8 cases (30. 8%). The patients had received antibiotic the- rapy in 69. 2% of cases and corticosteroid therapyin 11. 5% of cases. The duration of hospitalization was often lessthan 5 dayswith agood evolution in 69. 2% of the cases however 4 children , acute poisoning with hydro- carbonsremainsformidablebytheriskoflong-term respiratorysequelae. Itisnecessaryforthestateto ensure better regulation of toxic products placed onthemarketandtomakeparentsawareofbetter vigilance towards their children.
