Située à la frontière entre littérature et histoire de l’art, notre étude des illustrations d’après Gustave Doré (1832-1883) inspirées par The Tempest montre combien l’artiste alsacien matérialise l’étrangeté qui se dessine sous les mots de Shakespeare. Il s’intéresse d’abord aux personnages hybrides et grotesques et à la représentation de scènes où coexistent la comédie et l’inquiétude ou l’effroi pour faire entrer en résonance réalisme et onirisme. Le réinvestissement de topoï qui parcourent tout son œuvre graphique et peint fait naître le doute constitutif du fantastique perçu comme art de l’hybridation et de la juxtaposition. Doré s’approprie le texte de Shakespeare pour proposer une vision originale, fantastique, et intégrer celui-ci dans son Œuvre, au sens le plus plein du terme, aboutissement de l’ambitieux projet d’illustration des chefs d’œuvre de la littérature épique, comique et tragique. Abstract Our study of Gustave Doré’s (1832-1883) illustrations of The Tempest, that wavers between literature and the history of art, demonstrates the extent to which the unsettling universe suggested by Shakespeare’s words gets materialized. First, Doré focused his attention on the hybrid, grotesque characters, and on the representation of scenes combining comedy, unsettling moods or fear, uniting realism and dreaminess in a single embrace. The use of topoï that run through all his graphic and painted works causes uncertainty to spring to life, bringing in its wake fantasy that he viewed as an art of hybridity and juxtaposition. Doré appropriates Shakespeare’s texts, putting forth an original, fantastic version of them that he integrates in his own ambitious Works – in the broad sense of the word –aimed to illustrate the masterpieces of epic, comic and tragic literature.
