Abstract: This study examines the critical role played by the French Gendarmerie and Military Aviation in the Algerian desert during the Algerian Revolution (1954-1962). These two institutions were instrumental in the French colonial strategy to maintain control over the vast desert regions and suppress the Algerian liberation movement. The Gendarmerie played a crucial role in gathering intelligence, conducting counter-insurgency operations, and providing security to French settlements and military bases. French Military Aviation, with its advanced technology and mobility, was essential for the French military effort in the desert. It was used for reconnaissance, troop transport, supply drops, and aerial bombardment. The Air Force also played a key role in supporting ground operations, providing air cover and close air support to French troops. By analyzing the strategies, tactics, and impact of these two military institutions, this study sheds light on the complex dynamics of the Algerian War and the significance of the desert theater in the overall conflict.
