This lecture was delivered on 5 June 2026 to the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) meeting as the Garrison Lecture. The Garrison is an endowed, invitational lecture, and arrangements were made more than a year in advance to record the lecture and have the video posted on the AAHM's YouTube channel. Unfortunately, the tech equipment at the venue captured only garbled audio. This transcript was produced on 11 July 2026, by me, from a "scrubbed" audio file and automated transcript kindly provided to me by Will Beattie, co-creator and editor of the Multicultural Middle Ages podcast, and the Meeting in the Middle Ages podcast.
