On the Intention of Rousseau ». Résumé anglais: In May 2012, I published Conceiving the Republic, a reading of Leo Strausss On the Intention of Rousseau, a study that offers a new interpretation of Leo Strausss article “On the Intention of Rousseau”. Published in 1947, Strausss article attempted to unravel a famous mystery in the history of thought: why did Rousseau so vehemently oppose the philosophers of the Enlightenment in his Discours sur les sciences et les arts? In commenting on this article, I have tried to set out Strausss interpretation, highlighting the depth of his understanding of Rousseau. The present text is the preface to the book. It aims to help readers understand how contemporary China and Rousseaus thought are linked; in what sense the European Enlightenment can undermine the traditional virtues of Chinese civilization, while inviting Chinese readers to take a moderate view of the Enlightenment spirit of eighteenth-century Western Europe.
