Salluvii (or Salyes), a people dwelling north of *Massalia from at least the 6th cent. bce. Though earlier writers called them Ligurian, *Strabo preferred 'Celtoligurian'; and a Celtic element is suggested by their religion, which centred on the cult of the tête coupée. The chief shrines were at Roquepertuse (re-erected in Musée Borély, Marseilles) and Entremont (north of Aix). This hill-fort was apparently their capital and displays Greek influence in its sculpture, its defences (with bastions), and the layout of its streets. The Salluvii constantly opposed the Massaliotes and later the Romans until C. *Sextius Calvinus destroyed their capital (123 bce). Revolts were crushed in 90 and 83 bce.
