Abstract

Abstract Augusta Treverorum was established as the central location of the civitas of the Celtic Treveri during the Augustan era. Although there were pre‐Roman settlements in the region around the Trier valley, there are none that can be interpreted as a precursor settlement to the later Roman city (Clemens and Lohr 2002; but see Gilles 1992).
