The Ethnogenesis of Civitas Tungrorum and the Formation of the Province of Germania – The creation of the Civitas Tungrorum between the Caesar’s conquest of Northern Gaul and the reign of Augustus is not so easy to understand as it is for the civitates of the Gallia Belgica. The destruction of the Eburones, the conquest of Germania east of the Rhine, and the creation of the new Province imply the need for original solutions and mechanisms. The ethnogenesis of the civitates Batavorum and Ubiorum provide us with useful models for an institutional creation of the Civitas Tungrorum integrated into the Province of Germania between 12 and 7 BCE, some years later than the civitates of Gallia Belgica.
