Abstract

This chapter focuses on the need for self-presentation and the need for privacy as they can be viewed as two sides of the same issue. It begins by describing the general technological affordances of online communication contexts, as these affordances have played an important role in our changing communication patterns and provide users with opportunities for self-presentation and exploration. The chapter outlines impression management theory and describes research on self-presentation in social media. It examines whether people present their “true self” online or whether they use affordances of online contexts such as anonymity to present idealized or false versions of themselves. The chapter examines some of the privacy issues in social media such as social networking sites (SNSs). It only examines risks to privacy in the context of the social web, and does not consider other privacy risks related to identity fraud, online banking, or shopping.
